Green data centres
The Scottish Government launched the Green Datacentres and Digital Connectivity Vision and Action Plan in 2021.
The action plan aims to build Scotland’s profile as a leading zero-carbon, cost-competitive green data hosting location. It also supports work to achieve net zero emissions by 2045.
The Vision and Action Plan seeks to encourage commercial investment in a portfolio of data centres across the country. These would range from edge to hyperscale facilities, and would be supported by a highly skilled workforce.
Why Scotland?
Data centres are very large consumers of energy. But Scotland has enormous capacity to generate energy from renewable sources. That means there's an opportunity for the country to become a leader in green data centres.
The Vision and Action Plan aims to drive investment in this exciting growth sector to deliver high quality data centres that have zero to minimal reliance on fossil fuels.
You can view a shortlist and a longlist of potential data centre sites.
