About Project Gigabit
Project Gigabit is the UK government’s rollout of lightning-fast, reliable broadband across the UK. The programme targets homes and businesses that are not included in broadband companies’ commercial plans, reaching parts of the country not expected to receive gigabit speeds.
The Scottish Government plays a key role in delivering Project Gigabit procurements in Scotland, working closely with the UK Government to deploy funding committed to connect some of the hardest to reach geographies across the UK.
The procurements are categorised under local (Type A), regional (Type B) and UK-wide framework (Type C).
Local and regional activity
The Scottish Government leads the delivery of local and regional activity. These procurements provide opportunities for alternative network suppliers in Scotland.
The first Project Gigabit contract was awarded in February 2025 to deliver faster broadband in the Scottish Borders and East Lothian, and a second contract for North East Scotland was awarded in July 2025.
Further Project Gigabit contract awards are expected later in 2026-27, with a contract planned to include Orkney & Shetland, and another one covering Fife and parts of Perth & Kinross and Clackmannanshire.
UK-wide framework
The Scottish Government and the UK Government jointly manage the UK-wide framework in Scotland.
The Project Gigabit framework agreement is delivered by Openreach across the UK, opening up new opportunities to drive efficiencies between R100 and Project Gigabit in Scotland - enabling even more access to gigabit-capable broadband.
