Alan, a resident of Torness, near Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, is now able to access a fast, reliable connection thanks to the Scottish Government’s R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) and the expertise of National Broadband Ltd.

Living in a rural community with no planned fibre build, Alan and his neighbours have been reliant upon mobile broadband for their internet needs. However, being on the very edge of 4G coverage, Alan’s connection was unreliable. Speeds would regularly drop below 10 Megabits per second (Mbps), causing frequent buffering when streaming TV and constant drop-outs during video calls.

Recognising the need for an upgrade, Alan confirmed that he was eligible for the R100 SBVS through the Scottish Government’s address checker. He then contacted registered supplier National Broadband, who specialise in mobile broadband solutions.

Alan highlighted how seamless the process was from the very beginning:. he said: “We were amazed by how quickly everything progressed after first making contact. Our new system was up and running within a couple of weeks, and the improvement in speed and reliability has been phenomenal.”

Despite still using the same 4G network, Alan’s internet experience has been transformed thanks to the superior equipment installed by National Broadband including a high-quality TP-Link router and a high-gain external antenna. The entire setup was funded through the Scottish Government’s R100 SBVS, making the upgrade completely cost-free for Alan.

Alan now enjoys reliable speeds of 50-60Mbps. He can stream online content smoothly and has seamless video calls.

Alan was also impressed by National Broadband’s customer service. “Every query I had was answered almost immediately by email,” he said. “They handled the entire voucher application process and arranged the installation. All I had to do was confirm my authorisation for the upgrade and, once it was live, confirm that the speeds were satisfactory.”

David Hennell, Business Development Director at National Broadband, said: “In today’s increasingly online world, having a fast and stable internet service is an absolute essential – and yet there are many typically rural properties that remain poorly served by traditional landline broadband.

“In such cases, 4G-delivered connectivity is a quickly deployable and entirely fit for purpose alternative. We are delighted to be working with the R100 SBVS to bring superfast broadband to digitally disadvantaged homes and businesses across the country.”

Thanks to the Scottish Government’s R100 SBVS and National Broadband, Alan now enjoys a reliable, superfast connection that allows him to unlock the full potential of digital connectivity.
